Specifying a Test Method

Because there are different types of cable constructions and termination schemes, careful consideration must be given to the test method specified as each affects the data obtained in a unique manner. The following items should be included in the specification:

  • Characteristic.
  • Termination Scheme.
  • Frequency (if applicable).
  • Test Instrument (if applicable).
  • Example: Impedance.
  • Example: Single End
  • Example: 10 KHz
  • Example: TDR

Example #1:

Cable: Individually Shielded Twisted Pair
Spec: Differential Impedance @ 1 MHz
Method: Network Analyzer - Open/Short Method using a balancing transformer (balun)
Reason: This is the method used to test impedance at a certain frequency.

Example #2:

Cable: SCSI II 25 Pair Cable
Spec: Single End Impedance
Method: SCSI Method termination, single end TDR, one point measurement, 2-4 ns from beginning of sample.
Reason: This is the method proposed by the SCSI Committee
